About The Choir

The Haverfordwest Ladies Choir was formed in 1991. Under the leadership of their conductor, Nancy Mann, the choir has given pleasure to many while raising much-needed funds for charities such as Pembrokeshire Carer’s Outreach, Pembrokeshire Counselling Service, Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund, and Kidney Research Foundation for Wales.

The choir averages 10 to 15 concerts each year. Their repertoire ranges from music of the classical masters to folk songs and more popular selections. They frequently join with other area choirs to present joint concerts. The choir also sings for residents at area nursing homes and often entertains the public with informal singing in the town centre during the holiday seasons.

The choir has sung abroad on 2 occasions. In 1995 the choir toured Belgium, singing in Ostende Cathedral. In April 2001 the choir travelled with the Swansea Excelsior Ladies’ Choir to The Netherlands, where they gave concerts at RHQ Afnorth and Klooster Schinveld.

In January 2000, the choir took part in the BBC Millennium ‘Songs of Praise’ held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. They were invited to Brecon Cathedral two years in a row to sing at the annual Carol Service for the Parkinson’s Disease Society of Wales. The choir is a founding member of the Welsh Association of Ladies Choirs, and with that organisation has given concerts in St. David’s Hall (Cardiff), Brangwyn Hall (Swansea),

Truro Cathedral, Wrexham and Treorchy as well as singing before the Prince of Wales at Cardiff Castle in 1995.

The choir represented Pembrokeshire in the ladies choir competition at the 2002 National Eisteddfod held in St. Davids. As a result of that performance, the choir was invited to sing for the Chelmsford (Essex) Welsh Society in April 2004. That concert was part of a three county concert tour which included concerts in East Sussex and Bedfordshire. In May 2006 the choir had a highly enjoyable tour of Yorkshire and Scotland (see photos), giving four concerts and raising money for breast cancer research. This past May the choir traveled to Ireland, giving concerts in St. Mary’s Church, Clonmel, and Cahir Castle (Co. Tipperary). They hope to visit Oberkirch, Germany (Haverfordwest’s twin city) in 2009.

For the past 3 years the choir has been invited by the mayor to sing for various Civic Services and just recently sang at a service concluding the annual meeting of The National Association of City and Town Sheriffs of England and Wales. Other recent events of note include the “Voices in the Castle” concert held in Pembroke Castle in July to support Shalom Hospice and two concerts in St David’s Cathedral with the Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir to support Pembrokeshire Counselling Service.
